IBM Reveals CIO Study 2009

IBM unveiled the findings of its global study of more than 2,500 Chief Information Officers (CIOs), including those from India. According to the India Point of View (PoV) of this study, Indian CIOs appear to be more progressive as compared to their global counterparts. The India PoV reveals that Indian CIOs are looking to ‘make innovation real’ and ‘expand business impact’ for their respective organizations.

In this study, which is among the most comprehensive face-to-face survey done with CIOs across 78 countries and 19 industries, 100 Indian CIOs from organizations of all size were interviewed. The PoV finds that across majority of survey questions, responses of Indian CIOs appeared to indicate that they are more progressive and visionary as compared to their global counterparts.

The study also pointed out the key visionary plans for the future. According to Indian CIOs interviewed as part of this study, the top three priority areas for future were Business Intelligence & Analytics, Risk Mitigation & Governance and Virtualization.

When asked about the key challenges for future, the Indian CIOs pointed Business model change, Technological factors, and Security factors as answers. Due to increasing adoption of online business, the traditional way of doing business is undergoing sea change in India. Online business brings with it risk related to data security and keeping pace with tech advancements. And this gets represented in the survey, where security factors rank high as the challenge.

SAP Appoints Peter Gartenberg as Chief Operating Officer of SAP India

SAP Asia Pacific Japan has appointed Peter Gartenberg Chief Operating Officer (COO), SAP India Gartenberg will report to Steve Watts, COO, SAP Asia Pacific Japan and Interim President, SAP India.

Watts said, “I am very pleased to have Peter join the executive leadership team at SAP India, one of SAP’s most important market’s globally. SAP India continues to invest in its leadership position and remains absolutely committed to delivering world-class solutions which enable our customers to become Best-Run Businesses.”

SAP India is SAP’s third largest subsidiary globally. Approximately 30% of SAP’s global employees undertake a Research & Development function, underscoring the importance of continued innovation. Having generated customer acquisition growth of 150% over the past year, SAP India currently has more than 4,100 customers.

HP to Acquire 3Com for $2.7 Billion

HP and 3Com Corporation announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase 3Com, a leading provider of networking switching, routing and security solutions, at a price of $7.90 per share in cash or an enterprise value of approximately $2.7 billion. The terms of the transaction have been approved by the HP and 3Com boards of directors.

This combination will transform the networking industry and underscore HP’s next-generation data center strategy built on the convergence of servers, storage, networking, management, facilities and services. The resulting business outcome will help customers simplify the network, deploy a unique and innovative edge-to-core network fabric for the enterprise and improve IT service delivery capabilities, all delivered with best-in-class price-performance.

The acquisition of 3Com will dramatically expand HP’s Ethernet switching offerings, add routing solutions and significantly strengthen the company’s position in China – one of the world’s fastest-growing markets – via the H3C offerings. In addition, the combination will add a large and talented research and development team in China that will drive the acceleration of innovations to HP’s networking solutions.
3Com also brings to HP best-of-breed network security capabilities through its TippingPoint portfolio. For the past four years, TippingPoint has been the leader in Gartner’s "Magic Quadrant” in its evaluation of leading network security products. Approximately 30 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies have already deployed TippingPoint intrusion prevention systems.

IFSEC India – a resounding success

With 11,447 security professionals from all over the globe descending on Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India, the third IFSEC India has proved to be the most successful yet with 25% more attendees than in 2008.

Counter Terror India 2009, co-located with IFSEC India 2009, provided a one-day conference packed full of practical advice and solutions in the battle against terrorism throughout India. The conference was opened by Mr Don Randall, Head of Security at the Bank of England, who highlighted the need for harmonization between the public and private sectors. The conference was officially inaugurated by Mr Gopal Pillai, Secretary to Government India at the Ministry of Home, who outlined the government’s goals and the emerging terrorist threats. Splitting into two conference streams, delegates then had the opportunity to hear security best practice and case studies surrounding transport and border control and infrastructure and buildings.

ZyXEL Named to Taiwan's Top Ten Global Brands list

ZyXEL Communications announces that it has been ranked tenth in the "2009 Top Ten Global Brands of Taiwan" listing with brand value US$222 million and has become Taiwan’s top-valued networking brand this year.

Barracuda Networks Acquires Purewire

Barracuda Networks announced that it has completed the acquisition of Purewire Inc., an award-winning SaaS-based secure Web gateway provider. This combination broadens the company’s cloud-based platform, enabling it to extend its market leading security solutions across a variety of delivery models including appliance, SaaS and hybrid.  Additionally, this acquisition deepens Barracuda Networks’ security research and threat detection capabilities.

With more than 85,000 customers worldwide, Barracuda Networks is the global volume leader in integrated network solutions for comprehensive email, Internet, Web and IM protection.  Using its established worldwide sales channel, Barracuda Networks will introduce the Purewire product line to a broader global market.  As part of the acquisition, Mike Van Bruinisse, Purewire co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, joins Barracuda Networks as Vice President of Enterprise Sales; and Dr. Paul Judge, Purewire co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, joins Barracuda Networks as Vice President of Cloud Services and Chief Research Officer.

Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire ScanSafe

Cisco announced its intent to acquire privately held ScanSafe, Inc.  Based in London and San Francisco, ScanSafe is a market leader of software-as- a-service (SaaS) Web security solutions for organizations ranging from global enterprises to small businesses. 

Web security is a large and expanding market expected to grow to $2.3 billion by 2012.  By acquiring ScanSafe, Cisco is building on its successful acquisition of leading on-premise content security provider IronPort.  The acquisition brings together the Cisco IronPort high-performance Web security appliance and ScanSafe's leading SaaS Web security service.  This combination will expand Cisco's security portfolio to offer superior on-premise, hosted, and hybrid-hosted Web security solutions. 

ScanSafe's service will be integrated with Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client, the newest virtual private network (VPN) product from Cisco, to provide the industry's leading secure mobility solution.  In addition, ScanSafe's global network of carrier-grade data centers and multi-tenant architecture will further enhance Cisco's ability to provide new cloud-security services for customers anywhere in the world.
